Sump Pump Installation in Maryland
A sump pump is only as good as its installation. The pump matters, but so does the pit size, the discharge line grade, the check valve, the battery backup wiring, and where the water ends up. We install commercial-grade Zoeller cast-iron primaries built to run hard when Maryland storms demand it.

Maryland's storm patterns are not gentle. Nor are they predictable. A single Nor'easter or summer thunderstorm can drop several inches in a few hours, and the Piedmont clay soils that dominate Baltimore, Harford, and Carroll counties do not absorb that water quickly. It drains to the lowest point, which in most homes is the basement floor. A residential-grade pump rated for light, intermittent use will cycle hard under that load and fail years ahead of schedule.
Zoeller's cast-iron submersibles are built for continuous operation. The motor runs cooler, the float switch is more reliable, and the housing does not degrade the way plastic units do in a wet pit. We have replaced hundreds of failed box-store pumps over 70 years of work in Maryland. We stopped recommending them a long time ago.
What Our Installation Includes
- Pit sizing: The pit needs to be large enough that the pump can keep up during peak inflow without short-cycling. We size to your drainage volume, not a standard spec.
- Liner and gravel bed: A proper pit liner keeps soil out of the pump housing. Gravel at the base lets water enter from below without sediment.
- Check valve: Prevents water in the discharge line from back-flowing into the pit when the pump shuts off. Without one, the pump cycles unnecessarily and wears out faster.
- Discharge line routing: Properly graded, terminated 8 to 12 feet from the foundation, away from any neighbor's property. We confirm the discharge is not cycling back toward the house.
- Battery backup wiring: Every primary installation we do is ready for a Basement Watchdog backup. We size the power and conduit during the primary install, not as an afterthought.
- Test cycle before we leave: We fill the pit and confirm the pump triggers at the correct level, shuts off correctly, and the discharge clears properly.
New Installation vs. Adding to Existing Drainage
If your basement does not have a sump pit, we core through the slab, excavate to the footer, install the liner and gravel bed, and set the pump. The concrete patch is included. The job typically takes one day.
If you already have an interior perimeter drain from a previous waterproofing job, the drain ties directly into the new sump pit. We confirm the connection is solid and the drain slope is correct before backfilling. A properly integrated system moves water from the perimeter to the pit without any pooling at the connection point.
Every sump installation OBW completes is backed by our Lifetime Transferable Guarantee. If the system fails to perform as installed, we come back and fix it at no charge. The guarantee follows the property, not the original owner.
