Sump Pump Repair in Maryland

Not every sump problem requires a new pump. A stuck float, a failed check valve, or a discharge line that has slipped out of grade are all repaired without replacing the unit. We diagnose the actual problem, give you a straight answer on repair vs. replacement, and fix what needs fixing.

Common Sump Pump Problems We Repair

  • Float switch stuck or miscalibrated: The pump runs continuously because the float is not registering that the water level has dropped, or it never triggers because the float is tangled. Float adjustment or replacement is typically a one-hour fix.
  • Check valve failure: A leaking or failed check valve allows water to back-flow from the discharge line into the pit after the pump shuts off. The pump then runs again immediately, short-cycling until it overheats. New check valve, problem solved.
  • Discharge line issues: Discharge line disconnected at the fitting, buried line that has settled and lost grade, or a termination point that routes water back toward the foundation. We confirm discharge routing and correct it.
  • Alarm sounding: If your backup alarm is going off, it means one of two things: the water level reached the backup trigger (primary pump problem) or the battery charge has dropped below the threshold (battery problem). We diagnose which.
  • Pump runs but no water moves: Usually a clogged impeller or a disconnected discharge line. We pull the pump, inspect, clear the blockage or reconnect the line.
  • Pit full of sediment: Sediment in the pit means the liner has failed or was never installed. Sediment clogs the impeller. We clean the pit and assess whether the liner needs replacement.

When We Recommend Replacement Instead

We will tell you honestly when repair is not the right call. A pump that is more than 7 to 10 years old, has a failed motor winding, or has a cracked or deteriorating housing is a candidate for replacement rather than repair. Spending money on a failing unit delays the inevitable and leaves you exposed during the next storm.

If we arrive and find a pump that needs replacement, we will tell you that before doing anything. You choose whether to proceed that day or schedule replacement separately. We do not swap parts on a unit we cannot stand behind.
